How and why compromises preserved the union until the southern states decided to leave the union in 1861?

Civil war within the United States was inevitable; the question was when it was going to happen. The issue of slavery was big enough to separate the country culturally and politically, civil war was bound to happen, in fact, it’s amazing it was avoided for so long. The single most important reason war was averted for so long was the many compromises made in the years prior that attempted to keep the southerns and northerns content in the house and senate.However, with a country in the midst of major territory expansion, population increase, and technological advancements, the days of a united nation were numbered. Conflicts over slavery will intensify with expansion, abolitionism, sectionalism, and issues over states rights. To settle these conflicts, compromises such as the 3/5 compromise, Missouri compromise, compromise of 1850 and the fugitive slave act, and the Kansas-Nebraska act were made. Daniel Webster speaks on behalf of a united nation that succession will destroy ou r country (doc B).When the compromise of 1850 is issued to settle the dispute over California being admitted as a free of slave state, The Fugitive Slave Act accompanies it to make sure that the southerns get something out of it too and don’t feel cheated (doc O). This act states â€Å"That when a person held to service or labor†¦ shall escape into another state†¦ may pursue and reclaim such fugitive person†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (doc C) This allowed peace to be held between the northern and southerns. Abolitionists were extremists who believed slavery should be abolished.Among those, the very famous and feared John Brown is probably most recognizable. He went on a killing streak, handing out weapons to slaves and hated by the southerns and most northerns as well (doc P). He believed that war was the only answer to keeping a united nation as evident in his last words, â€Å" I John Brown am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land: will never be purged away; b ut by blood. † (doc F). An attempt by a northern named David Wilmot to keep slavery out of the newly acquired territories from Mexico was presented to the House and Senate in the Wilmot Proviso.It states â€Å" Acquisition of any territory from the republic of Mexico by the United States†¦ neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall ever in any part of said territory†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (doc M). However it never passes the Senate, which was heavily dominated by southerns. Many states pass laws that prevent any persons from speaking out or publishing anything against slavery or the abolition of slavery or any thing that would spark rebellion in slaves. The federal government over looked this even though it was in contrast to the constitution because it was thought to help keep the southerns from succession (doc L).In 1860, shortly before the war started, the Republicans dominated the House and Senate (doc Q). This obviously was a key reason for the democrats to escape the u nion and start the confederate states. Plus, the southerns believed is states’ rights and that they should be able to do with their states what they wanted, a evident in Franklin Pierce’s speech when he says, â€Å" I believe that the constituted authorities of this Repubic are bound to regard the rights of the South in this respect as they would view any other legal and constitutional right.† (doc H). In 1861, of course, is the beginning of the civil war.With too much tension and hatred between the northerns and southerns, it was time for it to happen. The compromises could only hold for so long, the population differences between the north and south were too big to never interfere with the sides.

Nursing School Essay

Nursing is one of the most respected and rewarding occupations in the healthcare industry. An exemplary nurse exhibits qualities such as empathy, selflessness, and the ability to work well under pressure as a team and also independently. Although the nurses job description focuses on patient care, nurses are also the patient’s number one advocate; the doctor may diagnose and order treatments for the patient, but the nurse is the one whom the patient sees and establishes a connection most. Nurses are skilled, intelligent, and fearless. They are a part of an occupation that I aspire to join. Prior to my parents’ retirement as physicians, I spent a lot of time in hospitals when I was a child. As a result to their profession, I was significantly more exposed to healthcare than the average individual; my toys were sphygmomanometers and stethoscopes, my bed time stories were medical journals, my play area a hospital waiting room. Coming from a healthcare family, I always knew I was going to work in healthcare but never knew to what extent; do I become a doctor or a PA? Perhaps a pharmacist or possibly a nurse? When I began working as an EMT in 2011, it solidified the idea that I wanted to be a nurse. One day at my EMT job, we responded to a woman with substernal chest pain radiating to the left arm with breathing difficulty. The woman appeared pale, cool, and diaphoretic indicating textbook symptoms of a possible myocardial infarction. Naturally, we called a Code heart and went straight up to the cardiac catheter lab. The next thing I knew, I was looking at a literal heart of a literal person on a monitor with all the blockages that caused the infarction. After the stents were placed it looked like a completely different healthy heart with no blockages to be seen. Obviously I have seen such x-rays of vessel blockages and I’ve learned about angioplasties, but it was completely different experiencing it right before my very eyes. I was in awe of the doctor and nurses’ keen attention to detail and swift actions that saved a woman’s life. The cardiac doctor performing the angioplasty along with the nurses and techs acted like it was just an ordinary day, but it i s considered a monumental moment in my life. It was the very first time I was made fully aware of the potential that medicine truly has. After watching the coronary angioplasty I realized that I, too, wanted to be a lifesaver. Thus began the journey of fulfilling my ultimate goal of becoming an ER nurse and part of a trauma team. As an individual, I enjoy helping and interacting with others. My EMT and ER tech experience has given me confidence to work well under pressure as well as understand the balance of empathy and patient care. One of my greatest strengths is my determination to better myself as a person and as a healthcare provider. I believe that motivation is crucial in achieving your goal and I refuse to stop until I achieve that goal. Along with my motivation to be great and do great, I also believe that we should always learn something new every single day. Be it positive, negative, informational, recreational it doesn’t matter—as long as we learn something new about our environment and the people that we provide care for. One way I try to further my knowledge is that I always ask questions and continue to always be curious in regards to learning how things work and indications of illnesses that may follow. Alternatively, I feel that one of my greatest weaknesses is my lack of knowledge from a medical nature of illness standpoint. Working as an EMT in an urban city has given me the ability to understand and execute treatments and follow protocols in basic life support for a mechanism of traumatic injury. However, although I learned about the nature of medical illnesses and its indications, I have never had to treat or understand the illnesses in its entirety for pre-hospital emergent settings. As EMTs, we are taught to â€Å"treat what we see† but we are not trained to understand the underlying reasons and problems that medical illnesses may have. Another aspect I consider as a weakness is that my ability exceeds my level of education at this point in my career. I can only ask and learn so much information on my own that there are still so many areas of medicine that are unknown to me. One way I plan on   working on my weakness is pursuing a nursing education to help me enhance my understanding and increase my level of patient care. I believe that being a registered nurse is more than just an occupation. Nurses are guardians of life. The field of nursing is not for everyone. Furthermore, I believe that you have to have a certain skill or characteristic trait that nursing school cannot teach. Nursing school can teach you pharmacology and protocols, but it cannot teach you the value of a human life. As a nursing school applicant, I believe that the Carepoint School of Nursing will teach me the knowledge and guidance that I desire to become an exemplary registered nurse. I am confident that my experience in  patient care and field of work, along with this nursing program will push me to the fullest capabilities necessary to become an extraordinary nurse and unlock my full potential as an individual and as a healthcare provider.

Literary Analysis of Macbeth Essay

The scene opens to Macbeth contemplating to himself about the murder that he and Lady Macbeth are planning. He starts off by saying , â€Å"If it were done when ’tis done, then ’twere well It were done quickly â€Å" This means that if Macbeth can guarantee that no difficulties happen from the murder, and the murder can be done so no evidence is left, then it would be best to kill Duncan and kill him quickly. He wants to get the deed over with as soon as possible. This exposes Macbeth’s reluctance, denial and periphrasis of murdering Duncan, because he refers to the murder simply as â€Å"it†. Diction becomes significant because instead of referring to the murder as â€Å"the murder†, he refers to it as â€Å"it.†He is trying to avoid saying murder, because he is very hesitant about murdering Duncan. The verb â€Å"to do† is used in with many different meanings in this sentence. By replacing all the meanings of done in the sentence you get If it were finished with when ’tis accomplished, then ’twere well It were performed quickly. By using the verb â€Å"to do† it also adds to Macbeths reluctance to commit the murder because he just wants to get the deed over with. Macbeth continues saying if th’ assassination Could trammel up the consequence, and catch With his surcease success, that but this blow Might be the be-all and the end-all here,† This means that the murder must have no consequences and must can be the with the end of success. By referring to the murder as â€Å"assassination,† it illustrates Macbeth’s departure from periphrasis. It shows he is no longer going in circles about the committing the murder. He again does not refer to the murder as â€Å"the murder,† but refers to it as â€Å"assassination, surcease, and the blow.† This might indicate that he might not be totally out of periphrasis, and still doubts killing Duncan because he can’t say murder or kill. The diction, â€Å"if† to start off the first two sentences indicates the possibility of not going through with the crime. Shakespeare uses the diction â€Å"trammel up† which refers to catching something in a net. In context, it means to catch the wicked â€Å"consequences† in a net. This creates powerful imagery and personifies â€Å"consequences† as if they can be cached in a net. Alliteration of the letter â€Å"s† is used when Macbeth says â€Å"surcease success.† This denotes snake imagery because snakes make hissing noises, and the letter â€Å"s† sounds like a snake’s  hiss. This indicates Macbeth’s wickedness for considering Duncan’s murder, because snakes are usually associated with evil. When Macbeth says, â€Å"be-all and end-all† it shows that Duncanà ¢â‚¬â„¢s murder will be the best of the best and the most essential factor for Macbeth’s success. As Macbeth continues his soliloquy however, we hear a sudden change in his thinking. He says, â€Å"But here, upon this bank and shoal of time, We’ld jump the life to come. But in these cases We still have judgment here, that we but teach Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return To plague the inventor.† The word â€Å"But† indicates that he is changing his thinking. When he says, â€Å"bank and shoal of time,† it is a metaphor fro life itself, because sandbars when constantly plagued with wave after wave from the sea, eventually crumble, so does our life. If Macbeth kills the king he acknowledges the fate of his soul in the afterlife by saying, â€Å"jump the life to come.† This reveals Macbeth clearly as a Christian, because he acknowledges he will be accountable for his deeds and may be sent to hell. This is ironic partly because his â€Å"dearest partner of Greatness,† Lady Macbeth is a pagan spirit worshiper and believes in the power of spirits. This also reveals Macbeths yearning and belief that he should be king, because he uses â€Å"We† when he is speaking singularly about himself. This type of â€Å"we† is called the royal we and is used by kings. By using â€Å"we† Macbeth not only recognizes his hunger to be king, but also reveals that he will do anything including murdering Duncan to become king. The line, â€Å"return To plague the inventor† is like the Hindu philosophy of Karma, which is that the effects of all deeds will come back, making you responsible for your own life, and the pain and joy you bring to others. Macbeth realizes and accepts that he will be punished for Duncan’s murder. Macbeth continues to say, â€Å"This even-handed justice Commends the ingredients of our poison’d chalice To our own lips. He’s here in double trust; First, as I am his kinsman and his subject, Strong both against the deed; then, as his host, Who should against his murderer shut the door, Not bear the knife myself† Over here Macbeth acknowledges the justice of Karma by saying it is â€Å"even- handed. He knows that if he kills Duncan, whether by poison or stabbing or explosion, then he will have the same destruction because others  might want the kingship and they might kill him to get it. This could also be an allusion to the witch’s prediction that Banquo’s sons will become king. Maybe Banquo’s sons will kill Macbeth just like Macbeth killed the king. This possible foreshadowing is the even handed justice that Macbeth might be referring to. Macbeth again uses the royal we to denote his passion for the kingship. Even though he is not king yet, he still believes that he is king. Soon however, Macbeth begins to list the reasons not to kill Duncan. This supports Shakespeare’s theory that people are essentially good because Macbeth used reason to go back to virtue. He says, â€Å"He’s here in double trust: First as I am his kinsman and his subject, Strong both against the deed.† Macbeth is Duncan’s cousin, and he has sworn allegiance to Duncan as his king. These are powerful arguments against the murder. Another reason why murdering Duncan would be wrong, is because Macbeth is † his host† When you visit someone house, you expect them to protect you. For example, this would be like me having a sleepover and me murdering everyone there. I am supposed to protect the people, not back stab them. As Macbeth concludes his soliloquie, he says, â€Å"Besides, this Duncan Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been So clear in his great office, that his virtues Will plead like angels, trumpet-tongued, against The deep damnation of his taking-off; And pity, like a naked new-born babe, Striding the blast, or heaven’s cherubins, horsed Upon the sightless couriers of the air, Shall blow the horrid deed in every eye, That tears shall drown the wind. I have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself And falls on the other —â€Å" Duncan is depicted as a saintly, good, virtuous king who has governed well. If Duncan is murdered, the angels in consequence would vociferously speak out against the awful murder and would let everybody know who did it and how. Heavy imagery is used by Shakespeare here to portray the king as some flawless individual who is comparable to angels. The personification of â€Å"A naked newborn babe† to pity creates powerful imagery. Babies are sinless so this would mean that pity is needed to commit the murder. Macbeth must have pity for Duncan, or he will never be able to carry out the plan to murder him. The ultimate hyperbole is used when Macbeth says, â€Å" heaven’s cherubins, horsed Upon the sightless couriers of the air, Shall blow the horrid deed in  every eye, That tears shall drown the wind† This portrays Duncan’s righteous and kindness to the point that the universe will feel bad at the death of Duncan, to the point that people will cry so much that the wind would not be able to blow anymore. Macbeth metaphorically imagines he is on an invincible horse, without eyes that will still deliver the message of the murder as a courier. He is going to need a â€Å"spur† to make the horse go faster to go above any difficulties he might encounter. While he is on his way back to virtue and thoughts of not killing the king, Lady Macbeth interrupts him as illustrated by the punctuation â€Å"-â€Å" Maybe Macbeth would have fully overcome the wicked intentions he had of killing the king if Lady Macbeth did not come. However because she interrupted him on his journey back to virtue, she left a small crack open, which could increases back to murderous thoughts. Macbeth is deeply troubled by the terror of murdering Duncan, who is his cousin, a honest man, and a loyal friend. Macbeth’s greatest obstacle in the way of killing Duncan is the guilt he has towards the deed.

Andrea and Overfield presented an excerpt from the writings of Duran. Duran served as a priest from 1556 until his death in 1588. One of the ways that the priest noted remained unchanged was attendance to the market places. The markets, as previously indicated, formed a chief part of the Aztec culture. The markets were operational throughout, and people were compelled by law to attend the market fairs. Duran observed that the custom of attending markets after a number of days continued among the people. He wrote, â€Å"The markets were so inviting, pleasurable, appealing, and gratifying to these people that great crowds attended, and still attend†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Andrea and Overfield 405). He further noted that when the market days were on Sundays, no one attended the mass. He noted, â€Å"Occasionally, this falls on Sunday, and no one hears the mass in the area o f the town where the market is held† (Andrea and Overfield 405). This attachment to the market place was so strong that it was placed first before Christianity. Duran presented this in what he thought was the most probable reply from a woman choosing between heaven and the market. He perceived the woman would say, â€Å"Allow me to go to the market first, and then I will go to heaven† (Andrea and Overfield 405). Duran identified three ways through which a person could receive honor in Aztec. These included soldiery, religion and trade. Soldiery was the first and the main way, while trade was the least admired. Nevertheless, it presented a credible way of attaining honor. Traders who traded in expensive wares and acquired wealth received recognition like brave soldiers. Duran reported that â€Å"and so they were considered among the magnates of the land, just as the valorous soldier† (Andrea and Overfield 404). Thus, the market presented one way that was accessibl e to most of the people. Duran noted that this attachment to the market as a way to acquire status did not end with the introduction of Christianity by the Spaniards. Green Living: What Is It? The earth, as we know it is deteriorating in ways more than one. In order to set it right and restore the balance of events, we need to take an initiate and change our lifestyles to support the planets health. There are many ways by which you can also start to live greenly. The actual meaning of green living is to live in a way that is favorable to the planet and does not harm, or use up any of its resources excessively. It shows that you care for your planet, and are willing to make an initiative to set things right. If one person starts to live in greenly, others will see the effort he is making and eventually start to follow his example. Because the condition of the planet is worsening day by day, it is important that we take an initiative right now rather than repent it later. The world is deteriorating at a rapid rate, and it is all because of us. Many people dont give enough care to what they do, and these results in a rapid use up of the planets resources. For instance, we often do not give enough care to the electricity consumption of our house. There are many ways by which you can start green living too. However, in order to actually make an impact, we people need to realize the damages that we are doing and we all need to make a collective effort towards the betterment of this planet. One person can make a difference, but one person can set an example for others to follow. Some of the tips that we can follow in order to live greenly are mentioned below. The first thing that you need to do is to limit your energy consumption. There are many ways by which you can do that. Try to avoid excessive usage of your desktop computer, because a desktop computer uses up lots of energy that could otherwise be saved. For instance, you could just start to use a laptop, and if you dont have one, it is certainly wise that you buy one for yourself so that you can limit your energy consumption. Now, as mentioned, one person cant do anything or make an impact on the planet at all. However, imagine if every person in an area started to effectively use their energy and started to limit their consumption, then what would happen? Ill tell you, the planet would slowly start to heal itself because a load would be lessened and slowly the resources that are used in generating electricity would be lessened and this could be highly beneficial because at present we use large amounts of coal and other thermal resources to facilitate our stay on this planet. However, the rapid consumption of these resources, which are non renewable would want day result in the death of one of these crucial resources. For instance, if coal becomes extinct, then a lot of activity on this planet would cease to exist and we would just be searching for alternatives that might not be found so easily. However, if we start to use non renewable energy in our homes and start to take care of our planet, we could definitely make a small impact which might enlarge and the whole world might just join the go green movement. By that, I mean that we need to make our stay more favorable in this planet so that we do not harm it in any way. There are many ways to initiate green living. The first step that you can include if you wish to start green living is efficient energy consumption. Many people dont realize that they waste large amounts of energy in various unnecessary things that could otherwise be saved. Electrical energy is made by the use of thermal resources and there are very few plants that make use of non renewable resources. Hence, the more energy you waste, the more thermal resources would be used up of the planet. If all these resources get used up, this could be very harmful for the planet in a variety of ways. At present, we are rapidly using the planets resources to facilitate and make our lives better. But, if we cut down on them, we could certainly make living on this planet a bit better and much greener. You can practice a variety of small things that could certainly save you a lot of energy which could otherwise reduce the load on the planet. If you have a car that runs on diesel or petrol, it would be wise to convert it to CNG, which uses compressed natural gas that is not harmful in any way to the planet. What happen when you use petrol or diesel is that carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are released in to the atmosphere, which harms the planets atmosphere as well as the ozone layer of the planet. We need to take care of the planet, because we have certainly used it in a very harmful way. Other things that we can do and change if we want to live greener life are that we can cut down on our energy consumption. Some of the largest amounts of energy are consumed when people leave the lights of their homes on and do not bother to turn them off. The lights just keep on using energy even though they are not being used in any way. Therefore, it is always wise and highly recommended that you shut off the lights before leaving any room so that you can save on energy. A go green movement has been initiated by the people, and it is gaining a lot of popularity as more and more people are changing their lives and living methods so that their stay on this planet becomes favorable for them as well as for the planet. You need to take care of the planet, because if we dont then there is no one else who will. We need to practice just a few things which would certainly not restrict our lives in any possible manner, but would certainly allow the planet to heal itself and become a better place for everyone to live in. Start green living, and support the planet, because it never gives up on you. Article#3 Time to Start Green Living! Summary: Our planet is slowly dying, and if we dont do anything about it soon enough, it would eventually begin to deteriorate and everything would be used. The world would become a barren place without any resources. We need to cater to the needs of our planet, and we need to change our life styles so that it becomes beneficial to the planet. We need to become much more eco friendly, so that no harm is dealt to the planet by our existence. At the moment, we are certainly not doing anything like that and in order for us to be able to know whats right and whats wrong for the planet, we really need to open our eyes and look around. Global warming is rapidly become an increasing phenomena, the glaciers are melting at a very fast rate. Do you think this is happening on its own accord? If you do, then you need to revise your thinking. The instigators of global warming are just us. We have driven the planet to the extent that it has begun to harm itself. Every day, we use up large amounts of the resources of the planet to facilitate our lives, but do we realize who is going to replenish those resources? No, we dont. All we are intent on is making life easy for ourselves. However, the time has now come for us to make a move and change our lives so that we do not pose a threat, or become a source of harm to the planet. We need to analyze and see that whatever we are doing is according the needs of the planet or not. If it isnt, then we need to change and start green living so that the planet begins to replenish its resources and becomes the beautiful place it once was. Floods, earth quakes and all natural disasters are instigated because of us if you actually look at it in a wider sense, and all we think is that the planet is hurting us. It is not in any way trying to harm us, but these are just signs of things to come if we dont take care of our beloved planet. Many people have now begun to realize the message that is being conveyed and have begun green living so that they could be free of the guild of destroying the planet. You can start green living as well, and by following some simple guidelines, you could certainly be on your way in helping the planet. It is futile to think that one person can do nothing, but you should try and set an example for others to follow. Try being a source of inspiration to others so that they also being to adopt green living as well. Simple steps such as turning off the lights or electricity when not in use could go a long way in helping the planet, and it highly recommended that we now start to utilize our energy efficiently because it is high time that we begin to listen to the pleas of the planet and try to make life better for ourselves before things get out of hand and it all becomes too late.

Perhaps the most famous soliloquy in literature, these words reflect the state of desperation in which Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, finds himself as he contemplates suicide. His father, the King, has died. His mother, the Queen, has remarried within a month of the King's passing, an act which has disturbed young Hamlet in and of it. To make it worse, she has married the King's brother, Hamlet's uncle, who is now the King of Denmark. As Hamlet's despair deepens, he learns through the appearance of an apparition of his dead father; that the old King was murdered by the new King. Hamlet's growing awareness of the betrayal of his mother and evil of Claudius leads to a deepening depression and madness. This soliloquy contains the famous words "Thus conscience does make cowards of us all", hinting that the "dread of something after death"-purgatory, hell, perhaps-is what keeps Hamlet alive to avenge his father. Many people incorrectly interpret those famous words of Hamlet's, not knowing the true meaning or background behind his speech. In his soliloquy, Hamlet contemplates whether or not he should take it upon himself to act accordingly to his uncle's/step-father's crime against his own father. However, later on in the play, Hamlet realizes Fortinbras' resolve and his quest for victory. By witnessing Fortinbras and his actions, Hamlet comes to realize that he has no inner struggle and sees the actions that he must take in order to bring inner peace to him and avenge his father's murder. He is grappling with the difficulty of taking action against Claudius and the fact that he has not been able to revenge his father's murder yet. Hamlet's introspective commentary is interrupted when he sees Ophelia. In his most famous soliloquy, Hamlet ponders whether he should take action against his "sea of troubles" and seek revenge for his father's death or live with the pain of his father's murder. Hamlet's weakness is later illustrated when he passes up the opportunity to kill Claudius by rationalizing that he has made peace with God, therefore sending him to Heaven if he were to be slain. In addition to his proposal of vengeance, he also contemplates whether it is better to stay alive or commit suicide. If he were to sleep, he feels that all his troubles would vanish, and this would not be such a bad thing. However, he says that if he were ... ...very attractive because it would stop all the troubles that one has to put up with in human life. He acknowledges that he doesn't know what that would involve on the fundamental level, continuing on from what he has already said, explain that because he doesn't know what the lot of his soul may be after death, he is unwilling, even afraid, to take his own life. He dreads what comes "after death", probably especially because he could be damned for committing the sin of suicide, in which case his existence after death would indeed be very bad; and he points out that if he doesn't like it after death he can't come back to human life. But, of course, one can be fearful without being a coward; and we see from events in the play that he isn't really a coward. He faces the ghost bravely, faces his killing of Polonius bravely, faces Claudius the powerful reigning king bravely, faces the pirates bravely, and faces death bravely. It strengthened my interest in the position and reinforced my confidence in my ability to excel should I be selected for the position. My experience working with fellow Somewhere students, organizational skills, and work ethic would benefit students visiting the ICY, and would allow me to grow professionally. My position as a Resident Advisor in Dasher Hall provides me with outstanding training. As we discussed in today’s interview, selection is a very personal issue for most students. As an RA, I am often praised for my ability to work with residents on issues that require sensitivity. I am fortunate to balance my strong people skills with strong organizational skills. I realize that during the interview I may not have emphasized my administrative abilities as fully as I would have liked. Thanks to my summer job with LK&N, I have extensive experience meeting deadlines, maintaining records, and generating reports. In fact, the database I am most familiar with is ACCESS, the program used by ICY Student Advisors. Macbeth: Tragic Hero or Monster Essay

In the play Macbeth by Shakespeare Macbeth is anything but a tragic hero. Macbeth wants to be a hero for power, not to help the kingdom and make it a better place. Macbeth is doing everything a tragic hero would not do. Macbeth only cares about himself, by ruining the great change of being and putting everything in danger. Also he has let the fame take over him, by not caring about the kingdom or the people of the kingdom. Macbeth also does not handle things like a true hero would, by killing everyone who he fears. Macbeth is a greedy, self- indulged monster who only cares about him. Macbeth is a selfish human who only cares about himself, making him a monster more than a tragic hero. Macbeth shows that he is a monster when he pretends to act all innocent, to get on the good side of the king just to betray him. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are talking about their plan to deceive the king. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to â€Å" beguile the time, Look like the time. Bear welcome in your eye, Your hand, Your tongue. Look like th’ innocent flower, But be the serpent under’t† (1,5,65-68). This quotes shows that for Macbeth to become the king he will have to deceive King Duncan, so he can gain the kings trust and then kill him. Macbeth does not do this for the people of the kingdom or even think about what will happen to the kingdom. The phrase â€Å"beguile the time, Look like the time† shows that he is going to deceive the king so he can gain trust from the king, and then just betray him. This is something a monster would do not a tragic hero. A hero would try to earn power and do it for the people not just for power like Macbeth. Macbeth is also showing that he is a monster when he would gladly kill the king. Macbeth is talking to himself saying, â€Å"If the assassination Could trammel up the consequence, and catch With his surcease success; that but this blow Might be the be-all and the end-all here, But here, upon this bank and shoal of time, We’d jump the life to come† (1,7, 2-7). This quote shows that if there were not any consequence to killing the king he would do it in a second. The phrase â€Å"upon this bank and shoal of time, We’d jump the life to come†, shows that he is saying he would happily kill the king and put the afterlife in risk too. That is something a tragic hero would never do, because they would protect their king even if they are o consequences and also they would not put the afterlife in danger. This is something Macbeth would have never done because all he wants is power. These quotation show that Macbeth is doing this just for power, also if he were not just doing it for power he would have let the great chain of being chosen him if he was destined to be the king. Therefore Macbeth only cares about himself, making him a monster. Macbeth has let the fame take over him, making him become greedy and not care about the people. Macbeth is so happy that he is powerful and can do anything and no one can stop him from doing anything. Macbeth has let the fame get to his head by this he has began not care about the people in his kingdom, not even his own wife. Macbeth is asking the witches to tell him what his future will be, â€Å"Though you untie the winds and let them fight Against the churches, though the yeasty waves Confound and swallow navigation up, Though bladed corn be lodged and trees blown down, Though castles topple on their warders’ heads, Though palaces and pyramids do slope Their heads to their foundations, though the treasure Of nature’s germens tumble all together, Even till destruction sicken, answer me To what I ask you† (4,1, 52-63). This quote shows that to find out what will happen to him. Macbeth would not care if the kingdom will destroy as long as he will get to know what happens to him. The phrase â€Å"Though you untie the winds and let them fight Against the churches, though the yeasty waves Confound and swallow navigation up†, is showing that as long he knows what is going to happen to him, he does not care if they have to unleash violent winds that tear down churches, make really big waves that overwhelm ships and make the sailors die. A tragic hero would not want to know what his future is, if it meant that he would put his whole kingdom in danger. Also a tragic hero would not force witches to tell him what will happen to him in the future, but he would ask politely and or do them a favor. Macbeth does the opposite and forces them to tell him what he wants to know by saying, â€Å"To what I ask you†. Macbeth also is really into the fame that he does not care his own wife died. Seyton has just told Macbeth that the queen is dead; Macbeth’s response is â€Å"She should have died hereafter. There would have been a time for such a word. Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day To the last syllable of recorded time, And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death† (5,5,17–23). This shows that Macbeth does not care that his wife has died, because to him she was going to die sooner or later. The phrase â€Å"There would have been a time for such a word†, shows that he really does not care saying why does it matter she would have died someday, who really cares. A tragic hero would have been sad that his wife has just died, and also would show that he cares about her, by doing something big like a funeral for her. Also the phrase â€Å"And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death†, shows that the fame has really gotten to his head because before he was a king, he loved lady Macbeth and know since the fame has taken over him he is calling her a fool and saying that she deserves to die. Macbeth is a self-indulged monster letting the fame takeover him and making him become more monstrous. Macbeth does not handle things like a tragic hero would but like a monster, who kills everyone who threatens him or who he does not like. Macbeth fears everyone who he thinks can take all the power away from him, or people who know that he killed king Duncan. A tragic hero would never kill some who he fears, but face them, something Macbeth can never do. After Lennox tells Macbeth that Macduff has fled, Macbeth tells Lennox everything he is going to do. â€Å"The castle of Macduff I will surprise, Seize upon Fife, give to th’ edge o’ th’ sword His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls That trace him in his line†(4,1, 156-160). Macbeth is afraid of Macduff; this quote shows that he will destroy anything of Macduff. The phrase â€Å"to th’ edge o’ th’ sword His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls That trace him in his line†, shows that he is going to kill or destroy everything or anyone that has anything to do with Macduff, because he fears Macduff. He is trying to get rid of his fear by destroying everything and anyone who in the line of Macbeth. Macbeth does this to try to make Macduff scared of him; also it helps Macbeth be proud and less scared of Macduff. It also shows that Macbeth is doing thing that no human would do, but a monster. Macbeth also fears of Banquo who will do anything to kill him. Macbeth has a feeling that Banquo suspects that he knows that he killed king Duncan, so Macbeth wants to kill Banquo. Macbeth is telling the murders he has a plan to kill Banquo, â€Å"I will put that business in your bosoms, Whose execution takes your enemy off, Grapples you to the heart and love of us, Who wear our health but sickly in his life, Which in his death were perfect† (3,1, 107-111). Macbeth is scared of Banquo and will be in peace when Banquo is dead. The phrase â€Å"Whose execution takes your enemy off, Grapples you to the heart and love of us†, shows that Macbeth is getting other people to do his dirty work for him and is killing innocent people, just because he fears them. Something a tragic hero would never do because they do not kill people who they fear, and they fight their own battles. These quotation show that Macbeth only cares about himself and killing people he fears being monstrous. Macbeth is a greedy, self-indulged monster who only cares about him. Macbeth killed royalty to make his dream come true and does not care about others. Macbeth also is a self-indulged and does not care about his wife or his kingdom. For Macbeth to keep his royal standards he will kill anyone he fears or who threatens him. Therefore Macbeth will not let anyone get in the way of him becoming the king, making the kingdom a horrible place. Macbeth had choices, a choice to let the great chain of being decide everything or, a choice of destroying the great chain of being and making things his way. Macbeth chose to do thing his way, therefore if he really was a tragic hero he would have let the great chain of being chose him to be the king and not Macbeth chose himself.

I always wanted to try something different. I have been to Malaysia last Christmas vacation. Honestly, it was the first time in my life going out of the country. I missed some of the fun visiting other countries because of my busy high school life. I am studying as a seminarian back then and my schedules Just won't come together. It was so disappointing knowing that my family re enjoying their summer vacation while I do my homework.Malaysia, I would say is more like the Philippines. There were old taxis, like those in Manila. I won't forget when we rode a taxi and the driver asked for an expensive fare (which we didn't know at that time), taking advantage of the tourists' ignorance. For me, vacation isn't complete without tasting their best delicacies. Though the food is expensive, it was worth it because of the unique taste and aroma of their food. In our country, food is also expensive depending on the type and quality. Pagkaing Pinoy is also delicious.Singapore, which is Just a six-hour bus ride from Malaysia is breath-taking. The tall infrastructures tell that Singapore is a very successful country. I would say that the surrounding is cleaner there compared here in the Philippines specifically Manila. You won't be late in going to your work or school because there are no traffic. You'll be amazed to be able to tour the whole Singapore in 45 minutes, yes, it is smaller than our capital city, yet, it's more organized. People. Singaporeans are more disciplined.Normal people live in apartments ecause if they buy a property in Singapore, it will take them millions of dollars. Only rich people have private properties there. Malaysians are more warm and friendly. Us, Filipinos are the most hospitable. In terms of the natural resources, we are the richest. Though the others also have forests, our forests ar e much larger. We also have the Philippine Eagle while Singapore has the white tiger. Challenge in My Life: How I Dealt with It

I Just decided to take some medicine and went to bed. The pains still continue to happen the next day. So I went to the emergency room. I told the doctor my situation. I had taken some x-rays. About thirty minutes later the results were back. The doctor had discovered a large mass In my stomach and wasn't for certain. So I was recommended to the Broody School of Medicine. That place Is thirty minutes from where I live. The doctors there looked at my x-rays and did some more tests on me. The BOB-GUN had found an ovarian tumor on my ovaries. Then I was explained to that I was going to have immediate surgery. I never had a surgery beforeI was scared for my life. The doctors also mention that my being overweight that puts a risk with the surgery. The first thing I thought with that being stated I knew I was going to die. As the days went by I had to go the doctor every two weeks. It was like if I was having a baby. Matter of fact I look like I was pregnant with twins. I guess that was no thing but all that the fluid from the tumor. I would cry everyday and I became depressed. I began to get weak each and everyday. So I had to get a blood transfusion. I remember staying In the hospital the entire weekend. I did not want to all because it was holiday. It was Labor Day weekend.I wanted to stay home and enjoy my family. Once I had received the blood in my body I felt much stronger. Then it was time for my surgery. I remember my surgery was September 7, 2005. I was nervous, shaky and scared. My family was by my side. I remember waking up the next day after surgery. When I woke up I thought it was still Wednesday the day I had surgery. Scary right! I had all types of tubes and things I was hooked up to. I was in the trauma center in the intensive care unit. I felt awesome. God is so good. There was no pain my body. Everyday I still think about what I went through with the sickness that was In my DOD.There was so much pressure and pain all on the Inside In my body. The onl y thing I can't do now Is to have kids. That still bother me but I am learning to overcome. I want to adopt children very soon. My plan Is to begin the adoption process when I am 30 years old. Has changed my life dramatically. Because if I didn't have faith in me and God on my side I might be lying in my grave or my body will still be with pain. Challenges happen for a reason. It can be for good or bad. People are put to a test to overcome challenges. Most of all we deal the challenges and overcome it with a success.

Gillian Clarke †The Field Mouse Essay

In the first verse, the hay cutting is depicted in a positive light: the hay is cut â€Å"Down at the end of the meadow, / far from the radio’s terrible news†. The distance from the â€Å"terrible news† leads us to expect a peaceful description of a harmless farming activity exempt from the violence happening in the outside world. The opening line of the poem sets up this expectation: â€Å"Summer, and the long grass is a snare drum†. There are some images inserted into the scene here that add a subtle feeling of discomfort or unease, the first of which is the sound of the â€Å"jets† in line 2. It is a sound one hears particularly if you live in Wales, the Lake District or Norfolk and Suffolk. The next is, of course, the â€Å"terrible news† of the radio, which, although we are removed from it, is still mentioned and therefore forms part of an ominous backdrop, along with the jets, to the hay cutting. The image of the relentless hay cutting is also unsettling: â€Å"†¦ All afternoon / its wave breaks before the tractor blade†. The blade of the tractor will be shown to be the instrument of death later on in the poem. Lastly we hear about the neighbour who is spreading lime over his fields. Here the neighbour is unintentionally â€Å"drifting our land / with a chance gift of sweetness†. The lime he spreads over his fields inadvertently drifts to adjacent land and so the poet’s land also benefits. Lime reduces the acidity of the soil, hence the use of the phrase â€Å"gift of sweetness†. | The poem focuses now on the unforeseen damage to life that results in the hay cutting. We are made to experience the activity of hay cutting from another perspective as the first line talks of the â€Å"killed flowers†. The damage done is extended to include the creatures of the field. Our first image of the subject in the poem’s title, the field mouse, is one that evokes pity. Clarke uses synecdoche and metaphor to create the image of the dying mouse. The child’s hands have become a â€Å"nest of quivering mouse† as substitute for the nest destroyed by the â€Å"blade†. The mouse is described in terms of its eyes: â€Å"its black eyes two sparks burning†. The â€Å"burning† is here suggestive of fear, pain and also of life – the two sparks as points of animation, the seat of the â€Å"life spark†. This combined image of pain and life continues in lines 14 and 15 as the mouse â€Å"curls in agony as big as itself / and the star goes out in its eye†. A strong sense of empathy is evoked in us as the poet reveals a compassion many of us feel when confronted with an animal in mortal pain: â€Å"We know it will die and ought to finish it off†. The last lines of the second verse widen our focus to the entire field, which is â€Å"hurt† and â€Å"bleeding† after the relentless blade. It is the children who witness the damage and destruction caused by the hay cutting: â€Å"the children kneel in long grass, / staring at what we have crushed†. Line 16 connects this specific localised agricultural incident to the war in Europe, the subject of the â€Å"terrible news† on the radio in the first verse. â€Å"Summer in Europe, the field’s hurt† links the two events, which the poet will connect in greater detail in the last verse. | The opening line of the last verse evokes the carnage that one expects on a battlefield: â€Å"Before the day’s done the field lies bleeding†. This serves to emphasise the connection between the war that has shimmered as a backdrop to the poem so far and the inherent destruction of hay cutting. The â€Å"dusk garden† becomes a refugee camp â€Å"inhabited by the saved, voles, / frogs, a nest of mice†. These different creatures are unified by their shared trauma, as are human beings of different nationalities and cultures who are victims of war. This association is underlined by what follows in lines 21-22: â€Å"The wrong that woke / from a rumour of pain won’t heal†. The poet now consciously connects all she has seen from the hay cutting with the war in Europe. She can’t face the newspapers and yet in her dreams she faces children who â€Å"dance in grass† just as the helpless creatures of the field. She sees â€Å"their bones brittle as mouse-ribs†, a realisation of the frailty and vulnerability of human and animal to destructive forces of people. The hum of the jets described in the first verse now becomes a â€Å"stammering with gunfire†. The very last image in the poem refers more explicitly to the civil conflict of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia, where the â€Å"neighbour† has become a â€Å"stranger†. She realises how easily her neighbour could become hostile: â€Å"my neighbour turned / stranger, wounding my land with stones†. The â€Å"land† referred to here has a wider significance in that it can be read to mean both the ground and any nation. The final lines suggest the territorial nature of the Bosnian war. Making land unfit for farming by spreading stones around (described in the Old Testament) is similarly a throwback to ancient times.

Disagreements on the Interpretations of the Zhuangzi - Essay Example These differences can be summed up in presenting two modern analyses and interpretations of some parts of the Zhuangzi, with emphasis on the governing forces that shape and control the universe. For writer Erica Brindley, she interprets the Zhuangzi as the driving force and endless source of power that moves the universe and is above even Heaven itself is the Dao ?, which is â€Å"an upright way†, â€Å"a method†, â€Å"a path†, or â€Å"a truth†.1 The Dao allows the proliferation of diversity, thus any kind of method is considered acceptable as long as it is in line with the truth, making it a cyclical or a circular concept. Meanwhile writer Michael J. Puett interprets Heaven or Tian ? as the apex in the universal hierarchy and governs laws initiating changes and transformations, similar to patriarchy as a social order.2 Because the two authors read and interpreted the Zhuangzi using two different terms with differing ideologies, there are disagreements b etween the two, wherein Brindley’s interpretation of the Zhuangzi shows that the universe has a cyclic nature accessible through transcendence, while Puett’s interpretation states that the universal hierarchy is linear with Heaven at the apex, and man must live in balance with it without having to enter transcendence. Comparisons of the Two Interpretations of the Zhuangzi Brindley’s interpretation of the Zhuangzi gives a greater emphasis on the Dao as the all-encompassing, dynamic, unbounded and limitless driving force that shapes the cosmos and initiates its constant transformations.3 This is due to how she explains some ideas in the Zhuangzi using the Dao as the major influence. For example, she interprets the Dao to be impersonal, thus when a person unites with it, the perception of the self ceases to exist and becomes indistinguishable through emptiness, Wu ?. Thus this person does not act of his own accord anymore, because the self is no more. A passage fro m Zhuangzi mentions the impersonality of the Dao: â€Å"The Way has its reality and its signs but is without action or form. You can hand it down but you cannot receive it; you can get it but you cannot see it (Zhuangzi 6.9).†4 The idea is similar to Descartes’ â€Å"I think, therefore I am†, but instead it becomes I no longer am, and thus my thoughts are not mine.5 This turns thoughts from something personal to something that is not from the person, thus being impersonal. On the other hand, Puett’s interpretations of the Zhuangzi gives more emphasis on Heaven to be the one governing all changes that happen in the universe, and that humans must strive not to work against it, but rather follow its patterns.6 This is because resisting or controlling these changes makes people resentful, and will turn into an endless cycle of dissatisfaction, whereas allowing changes to happen as fate brings one pleasure and peace. This can be further explained using a passa ge from Zhuangzi: â€Å"Such things from time to time may happen to come your way. When they come, you cannot keep them from arriving, but when they depart you cannot stop them from going (Zhuangzi 16.5).†7 By allowing things to happen according to the patterns of Heaven and forgoing all, man can easily live in peace. Another disagreement between Brindley’s and Puett’s interpretations of the Zhuangzi is on how normalcy or humanity is defined. For Brindley, what the universe creates that man does not see normal are the products of how the Dao allows diversity to exist in the cosmos, while for Puett anything that exists in nature, regardless of whether humans consider it normal or not are still the products of the will of Heaven and are thus â€Å"heavenly†. Prior to this, Cairo was the center of Egyptian civilization and the country was quite a powerful independent state. It yielded a great deal of influence in the region. This all changed, however, with the conquering of the city by the Ottoman army (Moshe 337). Prior to Muhammad Ali Pasha, Istanbul was, in essence, calling all of the shots for Egypt. Because of this, Arabic was not even the dominant language of the era. While the Ottoman Empire allowed Egypt to function as a sort of autonomous state with the Empire, the reality was that Egypt was not in firm control of its own destiny. This reality continued, largely unchecked, until the arrival of Ali Pasha in the early 19th century. It was during that time that Muhammad Ali Pasha immediately began to turn the army into a force that could keep the Ottoman Empire from dictating Egyptian affairs, while reinstituting many parts of Egyptian culture that had been lost. He actually became fixated on attempting to take over the entire Ottoman Empire himself. At this time, Ali Pasha began to shift the language back to Arabic from Turkish, and he began to institute a number of military and administrative reforms designed to create a technological Egypt moving forward (Colvin 258). Muhammad Ali as Ruler of Egypt As described, Egypt has a fascinating history. Perhaps, however, modern day Egypt can be said to have started with the rule of Mohammed Ali Pasha. Even though he was of Albanian d escent, he came to rule Egypt from 1805-1848. In fact, even after his reign, the family maintained a tight grip on the country until the Egyptian Revolution in 1952. This period of time in Egypt’s history was quite groundbreaking. Thanks to Ali Pasha, there were a great many reforms made to the military and economic structure of Egypt. In addition, his control over the country saw many cultural advances to take place as Egypt began to become a major player throughout the region, and, indeed, the world (Moshe 338). Prior to becoming the ruler of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha was a soldier. Apparently, however, he was not just an average soldier, but was so good that he got noticed throughout Turkey and began to rise through the ranks. Upon settling in Egypt, he increased the technology used by the army in the country, and used that labor to also create new schools and to improve the infrastructure throughout the country. His most notable contribution in this area was to implement a network of irrigation projects that had previously been neglected (Moshe 339). He did all of this with minimal interference from the current Sultan. In fact, he rarely even consulted with the Sultan; rather he was so respected among the people that he set out on his own to accomplish these great feats.
